Ken Morgan memories and funeral details

by | Friday July 22nd 2016 | Club, Cricket

Ken Morgan died last Thursday and his funeral will take place at Blackley Crematorium on Tuesday 26th July at 2pm. Those attending will please note they are cordially invited to PCC after the service.

When I first joined PCC in 1966 Ken was the established star of our 1st X1. I lived in Prestwich for 4 years prior to joining and used to read the Guide (Stan Foster) for news about PCC. I was playing on the other side of Manchester but always read the exploits of my local club and in particular the man described as Mr Prestwich in the local press.

I noted his performances were regular and I always thought that Ken must be a real player. When I joined I was not disappointed as Ken was an extremely good player and a person that wanted to help me settle at the club. A batsmen that scored 11,230 runs in 537 innings (2nd in our all time list to Steve Orrell), a bowler that took 455 wickets and 137 catches. An all round quality player.

Game memories include a cup tie at East Levensulme where he scored ca 50% of a score of 135, including hitting their opening bowler against an adjoining house and steadily for a complete over with each six going further and further. Always immaculately turned out and professional in everything he did. His only negative was the quality of his appealing for LBW’s as some were quite incredible. Slow left arm with an imaginative view of the LBW but as most left handed bats did, not when he was at the wicket.

Ken’s family supported him and were always present when he played. His son followed him into the club teams but alas for too short a period. We lost Robin tragically in his teens. Ken was particularly proud of his daughter Barbara who married and moved down south.

Throughout his life Ken and Pat enjoyed the Halle and watching Yorkshire CC (no accounting for taste) and in particular at the annual Scarborough Festival. A devout Swinton RLFC fan.

Over the last few years he watched PCC regularly with Pat and took great delight at the success of his club!

RIP Mr Prestwich
