Two titanic low scoring derby tussles

This evening, Prestwich Heat were due to make the short trip across the motorway roundabout to neighbours Stand, playing under the guise of Whitefield Eagles, for a 20/20 clash.

The 1st XI were then due to play Clifton on Saturday whilst the 2nd XI would have journeyed to South West Manchester 1sts.

There has been many a keenly-fought contest between Stand and Prestwich over the years – and this weekend, there’ll be a reflection on a couple of matches featuring Prestwich centurions.

The best Prestwich 1st XI individual displays at the Hamilton Road ground are Ryan Stanbury’s innings of 121 in 2014, and Bob Hinchliffe’s figures of 6 for 23 in 1974.

Today, we are rolling back the decades to the 1920s and focusing on two incredibly close encounters of the low-scoring kind.

On May 8, 1922, Prestwich edged home by a solitary run in a match where all their batsmen were caught out.

But on 25th July, 1927, it was a tie!

The scorecards featured in the Manchester Guardian as below:
