Tons of runs for 3 Prestwich players

Two past 1st XI matches are featured today against our nearest rivals Stand.
The first report dates back to 2011, when 2 Prestwich players hit tons.
The second report goes back almost to the exact day 35 years ago when a century was struck by a Prestwich teenager.

Played July 2nd 2011:

Centurions Matt Wiley (pictured) and Sam Holden led the victory charge in the battle of the local rivals last Saturday.
The Prestwich duo struck magnificent hundreds to set Stand a daunting target of 289 in 50 overs.
Trent Scott led the counter attack with an impressive 60 but the Hamilton Road side fell 112 runs short.
With both sides in good recent form, Prestwich delivered the first psychological blow by winning the toss and taking first strike on a glorious afternoon.
But Carl Sutcliffe produced a fine delivery to straighten and clip Danny Jones’s off stump for an early breakthrough.
Steve Orrell made a solid 34 until Stuart Catterall bowled him round his legs with the score on 88.
But that merely paved the way for some explosive hitting, first from Wiley, who scored his maiden century for the club, consisting of 11 fours and four sixes.
He departed for 104, having staged a 128-run partnership with Holden, who then carried on the clean hitting. He reached his 50 in relatively circumspect fashion before pressing the accelerator pedal, crashing 13 boundaries and eight sixes in total.
Credit to the visitors who didn’t give up, and Sutcliffe returned to the fray to dismiss James Wharmby and Steven Lorenzini – whose average hitherto stood at 94 – as the hosts sought to carve out quick, late runs. Sutcliffe returned 3 for 76 and Scott Butterworth 3 for 70.
Yet Holden proved immoveable, finishing unbeaten on 124 made off 81 balls.
The visitors suffered the early loss of Jimmy Cutt, bowled by Danny Jones for 1, and Chris Holt fell to the spin of Chris Jones for 10.
However, Scott was intent on putting bat to ball and scored freely, hitting five fours and two sixes to notch up his half century.
In tandem with Dave Taylor, they took the score past the three-figure mark without further loss until Andy Bradley bowled Scott for 60, made from 85 balls.
The in-form Catterall became the first of Elliot Woodage’s two victims as his sweep was pouched by Danny Jones at deep square, and wickets began to fall more regularly.
Sutcliffe wasn’t going down without a fight and he struck two lusty sixes but his cameo of 22 was ended by ill-luck as the ball trickled onto his stumps from his bat.
Taylor was ninth man out for a gritty 47 – Bradley taking a smart low return catch – the only surprise being that Taylor fell three runs short of the half century he normally clocks up against his neighbours.
It was left to Bradley to wrap up the points with the wicket of Jack Ritchie, giving him figures of 5 for 58 and 50 wickets for the season.
The five-point victory meant the Heys side remained one point behind leaders Woodhouses who also gained maximum points over Denton St Lawrence.

Played June 23, 1985 (Prestwich & Whitefield Guide report):

A superlative 128 not out from Tim Orrell knocked Stand out of the quarter-final of the Walkden Cup on Sunday.
The highly-talented 17-year-old did what he had been threatening to do since the start of the season, and he could not have picked a better stage to produce such an exhilarating performance.
Visitors Stand put up an honourable fight as underdogs, and until Orrell unleashed his infinite repertoire of strokes on the Stand bowlers, it was an evenly balanced contest.
Stand must have felt disappointed with their final total of 199 after a flourishing start to their innings, which managed a scoring rate of 5 runs an over.
O’Rourke took advantage of some loose bowling by Knevett with three early boundaries, but Airey was unlucky to see the ball trickle onto his stumps off his bat to give Prestwich an early breakthrough.
O’Brien then struck, taking the valuable wicket of O’Rourke caught by wicketkeeper McFarlane.
Kenyon and Ramsbottom joined forces and amassed a partnership of 114 in good time, Kenyon inparticular was in exhuberant mood, despatching the bad ball to the boundary on most occasions.
Moving smoothly into three figures, a score well in excess of 200 looked on the cards. Ramsbottom, after an uncomfortable start, settled down to play a fine supportive innings Kenyon, who reached a deserved half century.
Skipper Gethin made the breakthrough when Kenyon’s firm pull shot found the safe hands of Lewis at deep square leg and he departed for 69, hitting nine fours and four sixes.
Ramsbottom, just two short of his 50, went for a quick run but McFarlane’s agile pick-up and throw ran him out by a yard.
Prior to the fall of these two wickets, the introduction of Lewis and Hinchliffe had stemmed the scoring rate slightly, and once Kenyon and Ramsbottom had gone, Stand failed to find the accelerator button, even though there were several overs left.
Pro Burnage got a lot of height rather than distance on his shot and Wright, running in a long way from deep mid-on, took a fine catch.
Young Walmsley showed much promise in his innings but his powerful drive back down the wicket was well held by Knevett in his stomach.
Sutcliffe ran himself out and Tim Orrell claimed two late wickets, catching McClellan and bowling Alan Howarth, to see Stand fall one short of 200.
Orrell ended up with 3 for 26, while Lewis bowled very creditably, giving away just 26 runs in his stint, although he did not take a wicket.
Stand struck an early blow when Birtwistle was caught behind by O’Rourke off Kenyon with the score on 11.
Hinchliffe, shoved up to number three because he might have had to leave the game early for a happy event, was caught by Walmsley and Prestwich were 15 for 2.
In marched Orrell, and he made the next 36 overs one of his finest hours, and one of Stand’s worst.
Hodgkiss did a fine job as support man and carried the score to 76 before he gave a return catch to Sutcliffe. But that was all Stand was going to get.
Orrell had moved swiftly to 43 by then and he clocked up his 50 with a cracking boundary, one of many, and dominated the run scoring. Gethin played an ideal minor role, aided by one amazing piece of luck. He prodded the ball gently up to Carton at short square leg, who dropped the easiest of dolly catches.
Gethin was not afraid to punish the bad balls, while Orrell flayed the Stand bowling, whether it was good or bad. His batting was sheer poetry and he reached his century with a superb six off Sutcliffe.
There was no stopping him as he smashed the remaining runs to mastermind a resounding victory. His unbeaten 128 consisted of 16 fours and five sixes, putting Prestwich into the semi-finals – a “grand-stand” performance.
