Danny Pawson struck a magnificent 139 as the 1st team chased down a daunting total of 259 for 7 set by Glodwick last Saturday.
The free-scoring left-hander, who was in unstoppable form in last year’s shortened season, smashed 7 sixes and 15 fours.
With support from Marty Walters (32), Danny Ahern (20 not out) and Tom Gibson (17), the target was remarkably achieved with a bit of comfort, having 17 balls to spare.
Andy Bradley had earlier taken 4 for 74 as Glodwick’s total was built around a century from Muhammad Mohsin.
On Sunday, the 1st team travelled to Wallasey in the second round of the National ECB Cup where they lost out by the narrowest of margins.
The tied scores of 231 at the end of 40 overs meant Wallasey progressed, due to losing two fewer wickets.
Prestwich’s total was a team effort as James Wharmby (43), Pawson (39), Sam Holden (38), Haris Aziz (29 not out), Walters (28) and Ryan Stanbury (23) all contributed. It boiled down to the last over of the game where 12 were needed by Wallasey to win outright. One run was scored off the final ball to clinch a place in the next round.
Prestwich Heat (1sts) were in action last Thursday in the T20 Cup and eased past a total of 131 for 4 set by Heywood Monkeys. Pawson (47 off 22 balls), Walters (39 not out) and Holden (29 not out) combined for an eight-wicket win.
Prestwich 2nds battled hard against Thornham 1sts at The Heys last Saturday, losing by 60 runs.
Good opening spells form Wilf Reeve and Tom Scott (2 for 45) kept the run rate tight, but with wickets in hand, Thornham were able to finish with a flourish, and rattled up 254-4, thanks to Andrew Micklethwaite (74), Brad Wiseman (70) and Ja Raza (68).
A 72-run opening stand between Cameron Mapstone (43) and Adam Taylor (33) set up a foundation, but even though Lewis Smith (29), Alex Taylor (33) and latterly Reeve (20) made decent runs, it was not enough, and they fell to 194 all out. The 2nds are facing a tall order, pitting themselves weekly against 1st teams with pros, and yet only the lack of a top-order batsman turning those 30s and 40s into 70s and 80s is often proving the difference.
Muhammed Kasif was the standout bowler for the visitors taking 4 for 39, and Chris Heywood also took 4-68.
The 3rd team recorded an impressive win away at Oldham West 1sts on Sunday, with an excellent team performance.
They set a total of 206 for 8 after Matthew Korab scored 44, Josh Ahern 33, George Neill-Platt 31, Ali Sherazi 28, and useful late runs from Sam Harding (13) and Karl West (12 not out).
The home team were bowled out for 140 as wickets were shared amongst the Prestwich bowlers, for whom Muhammad Arif took 3 for 23, Harding 3 for 27, and West 2 for 27.
Prestwich 4ths fell 27 runs shy of the target set by visitors Edgworth 4ths on Sunday, despite a last wicket partnership of 46 between Alistair Reed (23 not out) and Daisy Hunt (13).
Edgworth had made 180 for 5, for whom Shields scored a century, and Prestwich’s stand-in skipper Dave Eckersley took 2 for 24.
Teenager Matthew Eaves then top scored with 32, but the run chase faded to 106 for 9 before the last-wicket rally.
