Captain James Wharmby steered his side to victory with a magnificent 120 not out to keep the 1st XI floating on top of the Premier Division.

He appeared to be at the helm of a sinking ship at 118 for 6 when still nearly 100 runs were needed to overcome Egerton.

However, Alex Taylor came to the rescue with a valuable 37 not out and Prestwich sailed out of the rocky waters without losing a further wicket in passing the visitor’s total of 209 all out.

Wharmby’s 143-ball innings contained 11 fours and 6 sixes and marked his 50th score of 50 or more (including 8 tons) in his first-team career. He is the 5th player to achieve this feat, behind Steve Orrell, Ken Morgan, Craig Duxbury and Sam Holden.

Wharmby’s knock was his highest home score against Egerton, surpassing his 104 from last season. Overall, he has now chalked up 8,451 runs, moving him up to 4th place in the overall post-war batting records.

Alex Taylor’s valuable 37 not out helped settle the Prestwich innings against Egerton at The Heys.

Earlier, Andy Bradley had posted the best bowling figures of 4 for 62, with worthy returns from Shivam Chauhan (3 for 41) and Ryan Maddock (2 for 48) to peg back the visitors, for whom Dave Hamnett top scored with 51 and former Prestwich youngster Luke Prescott made 49.

The 2nd XI recorded another excellent victory, defeating Worsley 1sts by 19 runs.

Several players chipped in to help accumulate a total of 193 all out, with Adam Cheshire (41) and Jack Doyle (39) leading the way. Uwais Khaliq then took 4 for 52, and Cheshire 3 for 37 before Charlie Jackson’s third ball bowled Joe Cox for 27 and a hard-earned victory was secured.

On Sunday, the 3rd XI kept their unbeaten run going with a nine-wicket triumph at Heaton 3rds.

The hosts compiled 176 for 8 from their 40 overs, restricted by the bowling of Umar Arif (4 for 23) and Karl West (3 for 29). Opener Joe Murphy paved the way with a fine 52 before Adam Taylor (62 not out) and Dave Taylor (36 not out) completed the job.
