3XI – THIRDS LOSE 100% START

Friday June 26th 2009 | Cricket

The team met up at the usual time of 12:30 and made the their way past Hollingsworth Lake to Littleborough Cricket club. There were rumours that it was going to rain in the day, but that clearly was a rumour, as there was hardly a cloud in the sky. The toss was won by skipper Heaver and he elected to bat in the beaming hot sun. The strategy being we would be capable of defending any score with our bowling attack.

Andy Jones opened the batting with James Wharmby and the two made a good start putting on 70 for the first wicket. Jones’ first 20 runs were mainly quick singles and two’s. After that there were crunching boundaries through the covers and cleverly placed ‘cut’ shots before being bowled out on 47 by White.

After the openers were dismissed, everyone chipped in with valuable runs, Adam Cheshire 15, Matt Walsh 22 and Jack Scargill 18 all got a start. In the end Prestwich finished on a more than competitive score of 189 all out in just short of the 45 overs which on any day was easily defendable with the bowling attack in mind.

It is worth mentioning Cheese’s dismissal, Matt Smith hit a gentle return catch to the bowler,  which he somehow dropped,  but it fell onto the wickets at the non-strikers end. Cheese, backing up, was run out, the worst possible dismissal.

Into the second half and it was John ‘cheese’ Kerambrum who with the first bowl of the second innings, took Littleborough’s opening batter’s off stump out. This looked like it was going to be an easy afternoon for the Prestwich side but it surely wasn’t.

After Thewlis was caught by Raj Bhaumik off Walmsley’s bowling, Hennon came to the crease joining opening batsmen McKeough. To the dismay of the Prestwich bowling the batsmen put on a match winning partnership off 112 and saw the game off with 5 overs to spare. Hennon completing his 50 and McKeough making an unbeaten 92.

It was disappointing to lose the 100% start to the season, but we can hold our heads up as we were beaten by the better side on the day.
