1XI – JONES BLITZ FLATTENS DENTON

Tuesday May 4th 2010 | Cricket

Denton 67ao (0) v Prestwich 70-2 (5)
LCL Division One at Egerton Street, Denton
Saturday 1st May 2010

A SEVEN-wicket blitz from Prestwich’s Danny Jones proved too hot to handle for Denton.

They were left floundering after the professional’s blast had ripped the home side apart for a lowly 67.

The Heys Road team then surpassed the total with little alarm to record a convincing victory and kickstart their season in the Lees Lancashire County League after their opening day defeat.

Prestwich skipper Steven Lorenzini had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat on a poor-looking, wet wicket, and the assessment proved spot-on as Jones and opening pace partner Olly Holt extracted exaggerated bounce and movement.

They both struck early to put Denton at 12 for 2 and then two major slumps were to follow as four wickets were taken with the score on 33 – before McIlwaine and Stenson staged a mini-recovery.

The home batsmen had decided the best form of defence was attack, and with a touch of fortune, farmed a few boundaries.

But from 60 for 6, they then lost the last four wickets in the space of seven runs as Jones finished with 7 for 32, Phil Kyle chipped in with 2 for 16 to add to Holt’s 1-14 return.

The wicket called for a less orthodox style of batsmanship and so Andy Bradley found himself promoted to the opening slot alongside Steve Orrell, and the pairing worked a treat.

The duo quelled the threat of Denton skipper Andrew Neill – who took nine wickets in the corresponding fixture last season – and staged a partnership of 53.

Bradley typically delivered a six over the boundary ropes in his innings of 24, from just 22 balls, before he was adjudged l.b.w.

Lewis Johnston gave a return catch to Neill, which he snaffled at the second attempt, but Orrell with an unbeaten 34 and Jones (5 not out off two balls) eased Prestwich past the required target.

LCL Results Matchday 2

Joe Moss took 7-38 to reduce West to 160 chasing Glossop’s massive 270-4 which included 104 not out for Bathiya Perera. Woodhouses enjoyed a ten wicket win over Woodbank with Sam Sweeney collecting 7-9 while Roe Green and Stand also took maximums to keep up their 100% starts.
