PRESTWICH WIN QUALITY SAVE T20 CUP

Monday May 31st 2010 | Cricket

Prestwich lifted the Quality Save T20 Cup at Roe Green’s Greenleach Lane ground on Monday afternoon. Excellent in the field all day, Steven Lorenzini’s side first overcame Swinton Moorside by 47 runs in the semi-final before beating Winton in the final by 48 runs.

REPORT – Prestwich bounced back in style from the disappointment of the previous days league loss by winning the Quality Save T/20 competition at Roe Green’s Greenleach Lane ground on Bank Holiday Monday.

Prestwich faced Swinton Moorside in the second semi final of the day. Captain Steven ‘boom boom’ Lorenzini won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first, with most of the team struggling from the previous nights activities! Pro Danny Jones, returning to his ‘home’ ground and Chris Thomas got the innings underway in front of a bumper crowd of around 350. Jones hit a quick fire 27 including 2 maximums, whilst Thomas made a slow watery 9 including 2 two’s.

Sam Holden hit 15, whilst Lewis and James came and went pretty quickly and Prestwich were struggling at 74 for 5 from 11 overs. However, the Prestwich star batsman this term Oli Holt turned things around with Gareth Barnes compiling a stand of 57 in 6 overs, Oli scoring 33 from just 20 balls and Digger unbeaten on 29. Bradley scored a few quickly at the end and the final score was pushed to 151 from the 20 overs.

In reply Swinton Moorside were never really in it as outstanding spells from Jones (3 for 16) and Holt (2 for 9) paved the way for a straight forward victory, Adam Cheshire chipping in with his first ever 1XI victim. Moorside were bowled out for 104 off the last ball of their allotted 20 overs . Prestwich were excellent in the field backing up some excellent bowling – all in all a really powerful and pleasing display.

With a delay of only fifteen minutes until the final (Bob wasn’t too happy I can tell you – you just can’t do tea justice in 15 minutes can you)?! Steven won the toss again and batted first again against Winton who had beaten the hosts comfortably in the first semi final of the day. This looked set to be a battle of the quicks as both teams possess 3 bowlers who can all ‘get it through’ on a quick and bouncy pitch.

It was Winton who struck first with their Pro Noolman, running in from just off the East Lancs Road to dismiss Prestwich Pro Jones in the first over. Thomas followed soon after but Holden grasped his chance and smashed 29 from 22 balls, including 18 from one over. Lewis played a great Test Match innings of 13 from 27 (wrong format fella) but when Holden went, Oli Holt underlined his credentials as our best batsman with a rapid 39 from just 26 balls. Digger chipped in again and the innings closed on 133 for 8.

Winton opener Dewitt was the star man in their semi final with 74 but he couldn’t repeat the dose as Bradley removed him for just 4 in the final. Pro Noolman was taken out by Lorenzini for 15 and with that Prestwich squeezed the life from Winton with a dazzling display of bowling and fielding which caused even the most ardent Roe Green fan to either applaud or go home!

Jones, Holden and Holt all bowled quickly and aggressively, and were well complemented by the spin of Bradley and the swing of Lorenzini. The catching and outfielding was also of the highest standard as the Winton innings spiralled to 85 all out, three wickets apiece for Bradley, Holden and Lorenzini.

A spectacular performance all round from the lads to bring home the trophy and winners cheque in what surely must be a confidence boosting performance.

Special mention should go to Roe Green and Quality Save for organising a fantastic day which all the lads really enjoyed being a part of.
