LCL Division One at Heys Road, Prestwich
29th & 30th May 2010

Predict the outcome of a cricket game at your peril – as Prestwich’s narrow loss to Woodhouses proved last Sunday.

The pendulum swung more times in this Lees Lancashire County League game than Big Ben in its well-oiled prime.

But it was the visitors for whom the bells of victory tolled – by 10 runs.

The high-flying Failsworth side opted to take first strike, despite the previous day’s downpour leaving an oddly-striped and partly damp wicket.

But it appeared to have little effect as James Clarke, riding much good fortune, and captain Mike Cassidy fended off the initial blast from pro Danny Jones and Oliver Holt.
Jones got the deserved breakthrough, trapping Clarke l.b.w. and then produced a peach of a delivery to dismiss Cassidy, who had made a fluent 35, well caught by wicketkeeper Gareth Barnes.

But at 80 for 2 after just 20 overs, the visitors looked set for an imposing total until Andy Bradley, not for the first time this season, put a brake on the run scoring and started to induce some brief stays at the wicket as he extracted some spin from the pitch, going onm to take 3 for 27 from 14 overs.

Only young Tolley stood firm with 53 and Bradley, working in tandem with a long spell from Jones, reduced Woodhouses to 117 for 7.

A mini-recovery was halted by skipper Steven Lorenzini, having Reeves caught by Holt, Sam Holden chipped in with two late wickets (2 for 7) and Jones polished off the last man with his second run out of the innings.

Woodhouses trooped off with 159 to their name, and Prestwich reflected on a fine second-half fightback.

But that pendulum was about to gain more momentum in the second innings.

Despite the early loss of Chris Thomas in the face of the spritely opening attack of Swards and Sweeney, Prestwich made it to 30 before a quick double strike from the visitors saw Lewis Johnston and James Wharmby back in the pavilion.

A misunderstanding between Lorenzini and Jones resulted in the pro being run out and the visitors had taken sudden stranglehold at 39 for 4.

But the complexion of the game began to change yet again as Holt joined Lorenzini for an excellent 81-run stand, taking the score to 120 before Holt sliced a ball to gully for an otherwise well-executed 42.

Then Woodhouses put on the squeeze, two further run outs and a couple of tight overs from Cassidy, saw the run rate shoot up and when Lorenzini was last man out for 51 in the last over, Prestwich were stranded on 149.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Prestwich’s game against Glossop had been washed out.
