1XI – DUKY PILE ON MORE MISERY

Monday June 28th 2010 | Cricket

Prestwich 181ao (0) v Dukinfield 196ao (0)
LCL Division One at The Heys, Prestwich
26th June 2010

Phil Kyle’s 5-41 helped keep Dukinfield under two hundred while a good 79 from Professional Danny Jones gave the home side hope in the run chase but it wasn’t to be as Prestwich fell an agonising 15 runs short of their target.

REPORT – Professional Danny Jones struck form with the bat, but it was not enough for Prestwich to pick up the winning thread.

However, there were far more positives in their 15-run defeat by Dukinfield in the Lees Lancashire County League compared to their previous lowly performance at Thornham.

Phil Kyle grabbed the bowling limelight with a 5 for 41 return while Jones, sent in as opener, made a confidence-boosting 79.

The side toiled hard in the field, putting in a much-improved fielding display, even though the visitors batted solidly in the first 30 overs and reached 100 for the loss of just one wicket.

But Heys heads didn’t drop in the heat and Dukinfield were gradually pegged back to a total of 196 all out when a score of 220-plus seemed on the cards.

First team debutant Tom Armstrong picked up two wickets and Sam Holden bowled a lively spell towards the end of the innings to also pick up a brace, but Kyle inflicted most damage, including knocking back the off stump of Dukinfield pro Ridee for 68, while Farham Hussain was the other main contributor with 52.

Changes were rung in the Prestwich batting line-up as skipper Steven Lorenzini linked up with Jones as the opening duo but the Dukinfield combo of Ditta and Ridee kept the runs down to two an over.

The introduction of Mark Stringer then had an immediate impact on the game – in the home side’s favour! For Holden punished a couple of short balls and Stringer’s first over cost 13.

However, Stringer gradually used his wealth of experience to outsmart the Prestwich batsmen. He eventually dismissed Jones, which swung the see-sawing game in Dukinfield’s direction.

Despite a couple of lusty blows from the bat of Andy Bradley, the target was ultimately out of reach and Stringer emerged with the man-of-the-match figures of 8 for 55.

The Heys side face a visit to local rivals Woodbank on Saturday in a bid to turn their fortunes around.

• Prestwich Seconds winning run continued with a comfortable 8 wicket win at Dukinfield. Five wickets for John Walters helped restrict the home side to 173 before Dave Taylor (94no) and John O’Connor (67) eased the visitors over the line to remain top of Division Two.
