Stand 158ao (0) v Prestwich 161-5 (5)
LCL Division One at Hamilton Road, Whitefield
10th July 2010

James Wharmby top scored for Prestwich with 43no as Steve Lorenzini’s men made amends for their opening day defeat to Stand back in April with a five wicket triumph. Phil Kyle impressed with the ball as his 5-48 contributed to the home side’s all out 158 total.

REPORT – Youngster James Wharmby helped Prestwich gain revenge for their opening-day defeat at the hands of Stand as they took the derby honours.

Chasing 158 in the Lancashire County League clash at the SCG, the Prestwich batsman hit a superb unbeaten 43 to steer the visitors home by five wickets.

Stand struggled early on to build sizeable partnerships as opening bowler Phil Kyle won the early exchanges and had the hosts in real trouble at 70-6.

Professional Amila Weththasinghe was still at the crease though and he reached his half century from 68 balls but, with wickets continuing to fall at the other end, he tried to force the issue and was well caught by Lewis Johnston on the boundary for 65.

At 112-8, Matt Holt and Jack Bond (20) came together and managed to add a 29-run partnership, before Gary Bond joined Jack and the pair took the score to 158, before a run out ended the Stand innings with seven overs remaining.

Prestwich made a steady start in reply and, despite losing Johnston early on, they reached 54-1.

That became 55-3 when Chris Thomas (24) and Sam Holden (19) fell in quick succession as Catterall and Sutcliffe kept a lid on the visitors’ charge.

However, a fourth-wicket stand of 51 between the experienced Steve Orrell and Wharmby swung the contest back in Prestwich’s favour. Sutcliffe then removed Orrell for 15 and Weththasinghe dismissed Holt for 19, both well caught by Gary Bond on the boundary, but Wharmby kept his cool and, along with Ste Lorenzini (17), guided Prestwich home by five wickets.

Stand travel to Cheetham Hill on Saturday with the third team at home to Flowery Field on Sunday. Prestwich entertain Denton at Heys Road.

• Prestwich Seconds coasted to a 9 wicket win over Stand at Heys Road. Adam Cheshire’s 4-19 off 9 overs helped dismiss our Whitefield neighbours for 117 and John Fiorentini’s men had no troubles in collecting all five points as David Taylor (52 not out) and John O’Connor (45 not out) saw the home side over the line.
