WALSH STRIKE ENOUGH FOR PRESTWICH

Saturday November 20th 2010 | Football

Prestwich moved up to second place in Division One following this one-nil win over Hindley Juniors at Heys Road on Saturday. Tom Walsh’s 36th minute strike settling a game which should really have been all over long before following two open goal misses and three strikes against the woodwork.

Prestwich Reserves came out 3-2 winners in their top-of-the-table clash against Ainsworth Reserves at Goshen. Another couple for Jordan Clegg took his competitive strike total for the season so far to a 28 after Anthony Lewis’s screamer in the opening minute set the visitors on their way.

Prestwich A Team romped to a 10-1 win over Tottington United Reserves at Drinkwater Park. Daniel Frappola scored four goals closely followed by a hat-trick for Anthony Roberts. Further strikes from Mike Reid, Simon McMahon and an own goal gave Craig and Jacko’s men the three points.

Prestwich Sunday team enjoyed a 6-2 win against Commercial at Heys Road in the Premier Division. Curtis Ward scored four goals while Daniel Ingham grabbed a brace to keep Prestwich 2nd in the table behind the Waggonmakers.

The tone for this league meeting against mid-table Hindley Juniors at Heys Road was set in the opening minute when Martin Hill burst through the defences to crash an effort against an upright. With the ‘keeper stranded on the floor the ball rebounded in to Hill’s path but the winger could only direct his effort over the crossbar.

Moments later Tom Walsh saw a far post strike ruled out for offside following Lee Bushell’s centre before Walsh was in the thick of it again with a carbon copy move on 20 minutes but this time could only direct his effort the wrong side of the post.

With a further couple of efforts squandered by the home side, including a swerving Danny Smith free-kick that shaved the top of the crossbar, one could start to wonder if it was going to be one of those days for Lee Metcalfe’s promotion chasing team.

Especially so after 33 minutes when Bushell showed good skills to make room for himself on the edge of the box and was unlucky to see his right footed drive bounce back in to the grateful ‘keepers arms off the far post.

But one moment of magic just three minutes later finally brought the goal the home side deserved when Curtis Ward surged in to the box before picking out Walsh square who made no mistake this time to slot in his third of the season.

The game continued in much the same vein after the break with Prestwich seeing plenty of possession but just lacking the killer touch in front of goal to make the game safe.

Sean Haslam came off the bench and saw his low effort in to the corner crossed off for another offside but with Prestwich ‘keeper Scott Gibbon rarely troubled at the other end, the home side safely collected the three points despite the slender scoreline.

The team now switch their attentions to next week’s clash at table topping Prairie United where a draw or a win will see the Heys Road side move in to pole position in Division One. Kick off at Colne Road in Burnley is 2pm.
