OUT-STAN-DING

Wednesday August 6th 2014 | Cricket

Prestwich were in four-midable form last weekend to make it four outright victories on the trot.

And Ryan Stanbury blazed the way on Saturday with an explosive and unbeaten innings of 69 to give them a dazzling 10-wicket victory over Dukinfield.

The all-rounder followed this up with four wickets on Sunday where Sam Holden grabbed 6 for 25 to dismiss visitors Cheetham Hill for just 48.

The maximum 10-point haul lifted the Heys side into third-placed in the Greene King Lancashire County League.

They faced a tough trip on Saturday to Dukinfield where rain reduced the match to 37 overs per side.

The home side made steady progress and at 149 for 4 with two overs left, there was no sign of the crazy turnaround to come. But six wickets fell in just 8 balls – including a hat-trick from skipper Andy Bradley.

He took four wickets in his last over, giving him a return of 5 for 42, while fellow spinner Carl Hey took 2 for 65 from his near-14 over spell.

A deluge then caused a further delay to the match, and meant that the Prestwich target had been reduced to 110 from 23 overs when openers Stanbury and James Wharmby took to the field.

But within 11 overs, the target had been surpassed as the outstanding Stanbury sent the ball to all parts of the ground. But it wasn’t just brute force, as his controlled hitting mixed in legside clips with some belligerent extra cover drives to see the scoreboard rattling over at 10 an over. Stanbury reached his half century in 31 deliveries, and finished off with seven successive fours off the bowling of Wade Lezar. His 69 came from a mere 35 balls, consisting of 13 fours, and two sixes.

Wharmby, however, was no passive bystander, as he played his part with 38 not out from 32 balls, with seven boundaries to his name.

The team took their buoyant form into Sunday’s clash with a Cheetham Hill and had them on the back foot from the off, as Stanbury and Holden notched two wickets apiece to send Hill nosediving to 20 for 4. Top scorer Tufail made 17 until he was superbly caught one-handed by Steve Orrell at gully to make it 34 for 5 and there was little defiance afterwards. Stanbury finished with 4 for 23 but the lion’s share went to Holden.

Dave Taylor and Tom Scott were given chance to spend some time at the crease, and took Prestwich to the verge of victory before Taylor was caught by wicketkeeper Tufail for 22 with the score on 45. Scott remained unbeaten on 20 as a wide brought up the winning run.

On Saturday, Prestwich travel to their Walkden Cup conquerors Thornham, who beat league leaders Denton St Lawrence last Sunday.

· Prestwich 2nd XI have a big date on Sunday at Flowery Field when they contest the Hulme Trophy final. Wickets pitched at 1pm.
