Harry Lewis

We have just been advised that Harry Lewis passed away this weekend after a short illness.

‘LEGEND’ is the only word needed when attempting to describe this man’s contribution to League Cricket as a player and as an umpire. The word is often over used but in this case does not do justice to Harry’s contribution.

I first knew him as a player at Stand CC where he was a quality opponent in a top side both with bat and ball. Thankfully he chose to come and play at Prestwich and I shared his passion for the game for many years. He also played regularly for Manchester Taxis in the a mid-week league.

When he arrived on a Saturday for an away fixture he used to throw his car keys at me as he had been driving his treasured Black Cab all night. His call name was SAM8.

Keeping wicket to him was a challenge as many opponents will tell you he targeted their leg stick from around the wicket which made him very difficult to play. His pinch hitting as an opening bat was quite incredible and very upsetting for various opening bowlers.

Keeping his future role in mind, he was not shy of appealing for LBW, which I always mentioned to him when he donned the white coat. I actually umpired a couple of games with him when he was left on his own, treasured memories.

GMCL has lost a brilliant umpire who was held in the highest regard and all at Prestwich have lost a truly great character. The attached photo which was taken at Roe Green by Steve Fallon, a close mate of Harry’s.

All at PCC send their heartfelt commiserations to Sue and the family. Funeral details will be passed on later.

RIP Sam8 and thanks for the memories.
