1XI – ‘WICH GRAB WIN AT WOODBANK

Sunday July 4th 2010 | Cricket

Woodbank 143-8 (0) v Prestwich 145-7 (4)
LCL Division One at The Kenyons, Bury
3rd July 2010

Steve Orrell scored 48 as Prestwich survived a mini middle order collapse to pick up four points away at Woodbank on Saturday. Professional Danny Jones shone with the ball as his 6-44 help restrict the home side to 143-8 before Prestwich replied with a 3 wicket win.

REPORT – Prestwich returned to winning ways with a tense three-wicket over Bury rivals Woodbank.

Woodbank were restricted to 143 for 8 off their allotted 50 overs, after pro Danny Jones had taken the first six wickets – five of them bowled.

But Prestwich had to scrap every inch of the way to overhaul the target, as a middle order collapse – three wickets for no runs – made it far from plain sailing with pro Darren Foy inflicting most of the damage and taking 4 for 76.

The batting was dominated by two of the game’s elder left-handed statesmen as Neil Ridehaugh – playing his last game for Woodbank where he has notched more than 10,000 runs, hit an aptly defiant 51 not out.

His Prestwich counterpart Steve Orrell returned to form with a likewise battling 48.

Woodbank had made a solid enough start, reaching 39 for 0 by the 10th over before Jones struck with the score on 42.

The dismissal of Brett Collins for 23 saw Jones, in tandem with Phil Kyle, put a stranglehold on the scoring rate and a mere 8 runs came off the next 10 overs.

Then Jones started to undo the home middle order with a serious of yorkers.

Andy Bradley replaced the luckless Kyle and his 14 overs conceded just 36 runs.

Ridehaugh, shackling his natural inclination for fluency on a track with exaggerated bounce, had to dig in to haul his side round from 61 for 6. He was helped by 18 from Crabtree to push the total beyond three-figures without further loss.

Ridehaugh’s studious innings was rewarded n the final over when he clocked up a fitting half century.

Woodbank struck twice as both Prestwich openers Jones and James Wharmby were caught off Foy’s bowling, but Sam Holden and Orrell came together at 28 for 2 to put together a promising stand.

Holden arguably played the shot of the day with a backfoot cover drive off Foy, but was then dismissed in slightly unusual circumstances.
Responding to call from Orrell, he stubbed his bat in the ground as he neared the crease and was run out for 22.

That was followed by another quirky dismissal as skipper Steven Lorenzini was run out – this time Orrell’s firm drive brushed the fingertips of bowler McCheyne and he was a yard out of his ground.

Orrell fell two short of his fifty, having hit nine boundaries, when caught at gully by McCheyne off Foy, and 115 for 4 suddenly became 115 for 7 when Gareth Barnes holed out for 14 and Lewis Johnston was l.b.w. to Foy first ball.

However, Chris Thomas with an unbeaten and unflustered 20, together with Bradley (9 not out) ensured Prestwich were able to clutch a most welcome four point victory.

The Heys side faces another derby on Saturday with an even shorter journey to neighbours Stand, who comfortably came out on top when the sides met back in April on the first day of the season.

• Prestwich Seconds were left biting their nails at The Heys as Jack Scargill guided the home side over the line in a narrow 1 wicket success over Woodbank on Saturday.
