FOOTBALL UPDATE – SEPT 2010

Sunday September 26th 2010 | Football

With the last cricket balls bowled for another season, here’s on update on what’s been going on with our senior football teams since the new season began back in July.

Prestwich First Team

Entering the Myles N. Kenyon cup for the first time, Prestwich successfully negotiated the first stage with two wins and a draw to finish winners of their group. A 5-2 defeat against Walshaw Sports ended our interest in the competition at the quarter-final stage but the games proved useful competitive pre-season action for the lads.

The only downside of pre-season was the long-term injury to striker Shaun Jackson who suffered a broken tibia and fibula at Little Lever while defender Mark Moir sustained knee ligament damage in a friendly match.

Following promotion as Champions to the Lancashire Amateur League Division One, the first team’s league campaign started brightly with a 9-0 thrashing of Little Lever. Victories over Tyldesley United and Mostonians sandwiched a disappointing defeat in the preliminary round of the 1XI cup at home to Roach Dynamos. A draw in the return game at Mostonians was followed in the league by another three points against Horwich RMI.

Success in the first round of the Lancashire Amateur Cup has meant a decent start to the season for Lee Metcalfe’s team ahead of this coming Saturday’s Amateur Cup second round tie at home to Aspull.

Prestwich Reserves

Liam Morrissey and Brian Clegg joined the club from neighbours Prestwich Heys FC and their team had no trouble getting to grips with their division with an 11-0 demolition of Bury GSOB A at Buckley Wells.

Wins over Old Boltonians, Ainsworth, Roach and Bolton Ambassadors kept their 100% league start going and fired the second string to the top of Division Five.

A hard fought 4-2 win over Chaddertonians Reserves yesterday in the 2XI cup sets up a second round tie against Roach Dynamos Reserves on a date to be arranged.

Prestwich A Team

With too many players for just two teams, we quickly set up a third team which was accepted in to Division Six North.

The team endured a shaky start to the new season with two defeats and a draw as the new team took time to gel but a 6-2 win at Hesketh Casuals a couple of weeks ago has hopefully kick started their season in to life.

Prestwich Sunday Team

After the close calls at the end of last season finishing third in the Premier Division and finalists in the Millennium Cup, the Sunday team have had an indifferent start to the new season. A 4-2 defeat at Waggonmakers on the opening day was followed by a home win over Duck Club.

An away tie to an all conquering Copper Pot FC in the Lancashire Sunday Trophy awaited but our thread-bare team were dumped out of the competition following a 6-2 loss.

League action then returned and another glut of goals came this morning as Prestwich hit back from 4-1 and 5-3 down to grab a point against unbeaten Inter Alliance in a five-all draw.
