BUSH DOUBLE SEALS LANCS CUP PROGRESS

Monday October 4th 2010 | Football

Lee Bushell’s quickfire double knocked the stuffing out of visitors Aspull in Saturday’s Lancashire Amateur Cup second round tie at Heys Road. Further strikes from Danny Smith and Mike Kirkley gave the visitors a 4-0 lead at the break which despite two consolation goals from the visitors, was enough to send the Blues through.

Following progression from the first round after their win over Leigh Phoenix, Prestwich entertained Aspull FC of the Wigan Amateur League in this second round Lancashire Amateur Cup tie on Saturday.

The home side set the early tempo in the game as Aspull struggled to contain their hosts and Lee Metcalfe’s men got their reward in the 19th minute when Bushell fired in from the edge of the box.

The goal sparked a flurry of activity in front of the Aspull goal and Bushell rifled in his second from a tight angle just two minutes later.

And when Danny Smith steered the ball in to the corner from Bushell’s centre just moments later, the visitors were left shell-shocked from the rapid Prestwich blitz.

Left back Mike Kirkley went on another attack down the flank and played a one-two with Smith before lifting a delightful lob over the stranded Aspull ‘keeper for his side’s fourth of the game.

With the game pretty much in the bag, the home side eased off the pedal after the break and Aspull started to threaten for the first times in the match.

When a forward broke through the back line, ‘keeper Mike Hudson rushed out to smother but clipped the forward to concede a penalty which was duly converted.

Although the visitors did find the net again with a little over 20 minutes remaining, the result for the home side was never really threatened. Indeed with a little more composure in front of goal, coupled with some fine saves by the Aspull goalie, the lead should have extended further.

The win sets up a third round tie at home to Jacks House FC of the Rochdale Alliance League on Saturday 23rd October, kick-off 2pm.

Before that though, the team travel to Little Lever Reserves this coming Saturday in the league. Kick off at Mytham Road is 2:30pm.

Liam Morrissey’s men went in to this game on the back of six straight league and cup wins and looked confident of retaining their 100% record after strikes from Bradley Clegg, Jordan Clegg and Kieran Doherty gave the second team a 3-1 lead.

But the home side, only defeated once this season so far, struck twice to level the game and share the spoils.

The point keeps Prestwich top of Division Five ahead of next Saturday’s league fixture at home to Oldham Hulmeians Reserves. Kick off at Heys Road is 2:30pm.

The third team built on their win at Hesketh a couple of weeks ago to take all three points against Old Blacks on Saturday.

A double from Anthony Roberts, a strike from Mike Reid and a headed effort from Danny Ingham sealed the points for Peter Lorenzini’s side which moved the team up to third in the table.

The team are back in action next Saturday as they host Bolton Wyresdale B at Drinkwater Park, Prestwich. Kick off is 2:30pm.

• The Sunday team’s scheduled fixture at home against Staff of Life was called off on Sunday morning due to a waterlogged pitch. They are back in action next Sunday at home to Manchester Limo’s kicking off at 10:30am.
