RESERVES CLINCH TITLE IN STYLE

Sunday April 3rd 2011 | Football

Prestwich FC Reserve Team clinched the Lancashire Amateur League Division Five title on Saturday afternoon following a good 6-0 win at Roach Dynamos Reserves in Heywood.

Going in to the game knowing a win would see the title brought to Heys Road, leading goalscorer Jordan Clegg wasted no time in firing his team in front with a strike after only ten minutes.

Clegg added to his already sizable tally for the season ten minutes later before Phil Byrnes made the game safe with a goal just before half time.

Clegg grabbed his hat-trick and an incredible 41st competitive strike for the season on the hour before brother Bradley got in on the action with a fine glancing header from six yards.

Defender Jake Howell wrapped up the scoring in the latter stages as he hooked in from close range and as the final whistle blew, the corks started popping on the side line as Liam Morrissey and Brian Clegg’s men wrapped up the title with a game left to play.

But this isn’t the end of the story for the Reserve team as they now switch their attention to Tuesday nights tough cup quarter-final tie against Rossendale St Clement’s Reserves at Heys Road. Kick off 6:30pm.

Prestwich First Team continued their good form with a 1-0 win at Old Blackburnians Reserves on Saturday. Winger Lee Bushell fired in the only goal of the game in the 30th minute to seal the three points for Lee Metcalfe’s men.

This result followed the team’s midweek 4-1 success over Ainsworth and Prestwich now sit five points clear at the top of Division One although rivals Hesketh Casuals have two games in hand.

Prestwich travel to third place Prairie United on Wednesday evening.

Prestwich A Team’s mini slump continued with a 3-1 reverse at home to Hesketh Casuals ‘B’. Danny Frappola’s strike the only consolation for Craig Howarth’s men in their bid for promotion from Division Six North.

Prestwich Sunday Team endured the archetypal game of two halves as they took on Cheers Bar at Drinkwater Park in the Bury Premier Division. Goals from Darren Buckley and Curtis Ward (penalty) gave the visitors a two-nil lead although this did not truly reflect their dominance in a half that saw a number of good chances wasted by Peter Lorenzini’s team.

The home side hit back though and pegged the visitors back for long periods in the match. Their rewards came first from close range following a corner on the left before a debatable penalty award gave the home side the equaliser despite the best efforts of stand in keeper Chris Hopkins.
