Rain proved the eventual winner on a day when two Scotts were the dominant factors.

Denton’s opening batsman Scott Allen cracked an excellent 92 while Prestwich’s Tom Scott grabbed four wickets.

But the contest was eventually abandoned due to rain, when 20 overs could not be completed in the Prestwich innings.

Allen’s composed knock set up an imposing total of 227 in a game already reduced to 47 overs at the Egerton Street ground because of a delayed start.

Allen fell eight runs short his century when a spear-like returning throw from Tom Gibson on the deep square boundary saw the batsman run out, several yards shy of the crease.

Scott returned figures of 4 for 41 from his eight-over spell at the end, but with Martin Leech hitting 40 and Karl Taylor finishing on 41 not out, the score still rose comfortably beyond the 200-run mark.

Prestwich’s reply was dogged by interruptions for rain, causing several re-assessments of the total needed in tandem with the reduction in overs.

Prestwich had needed around 10 runs an over with nine overs of the game left, when a quickfire blast of 24 from Ali Raza and 32 not out from Carl Hey still put the Heys team in with an outside chance, before a hefty deluge finally put paid to the chances of a positive outcome to the game with the score on 92 for 4.

A tough double-header this weekend starts with a visit to Woodbank on Saturday, who lie one place above fifth-placed Prestwich. It is then followed on Sunday by the first team’s last home game of the season when they host title challengers Glossop, who sit five points behind leaders Denton St Lawrence.
